Finally I decided to install Windows 7 on my Vista desktop replacement HP Pavilion dv9000 on steroids. First surprise, upgrading to Windows 7 from any version of Windows is possible. The guys in Microsoft decided to make it impossible for Win XP customers and that is A BIG MISTAKE. Millions people in the world will do the migration from XP if it was a simple as “I load my Win 7 DVD, run the upgrade and voila!”. I can’t believe there is a marketing justification for not offering us that.
The second surprise is that the best version of Win 7, the Ultimate version is damn expensive. It cost me 400 USD (2999 rands) to get a copy. That’s the price of a brand new laptop or two netbooks with Win 7 preloaded. I call that a crime, no matter what Microsoft will say.
The third surprise is that Windows 7 is not so different from Vista, but it is damn fast. Compared to all what we have experienced with windows post NT, Win 7 is fast, stable and nice to use. I may also add that it is more secure. I have been using it for a month now and it has been a nice experience.
