Microsoft has resurrected the Windows 7 Family Pack Upgrade, but only “while supplies last.”
The $150 bundle, made available this week, allows the latest version of the Windows operating system to be installed on up to three computers, presuming the PCs are already running the Vista or XP.
Purchasing three individual Home Premium upgrade packages at retail at list price would otherwise cost consumers about $330. As of now, Amazon.com is selling the Family Pack at discount for $140.
The Family Pack first surfaced last fall , shortly after Microsoft introduced version 7 to huge fanfare on Oct. 22, and was pulled from the shelves shortly before Christmas, when Microsoft told customers that the product had sold out.
The company said that the cut-price pack would be offered in Canada and internationally after the first anniversary. In this country, it went on sale Sunday.
The notion of a multiple-copy family pack software concept is not Microsoft’s alone; Apple has long been selling multipack versions of the Leopard and Snow Leopard OS programs.
