PC at a time
one good turn deserves another.
Sometimes in September 2005, my editor at Standard Today, Jojo Robles, thrust his Apple iBook G3 old me with a “request” that I may learn to use. Fortunately, I liked what I saw, and when it came time to retire my old Fujitsu laptop Windows 98, I opted for an iBook G4, which continues to serve me well.
Moving from Windows to Mac OS X was not very difficult. A big change was in store for me in June 2006 when, in a fit of frustration with repeated accidents on my home computer, I nuked Windows XP and installed Ubuntu Linux on it.
Since I talked about my trip open source in this column, highlighting the difficulties I encountered and the satisfaction I derived from the exercise. On balance, the satisfaction of the installation and use of open source and free software on my PC than offset any disadvantages of leaving the proprietary world of Microsoft Windows.
I have not missed the viruses and spyware that have been constant threats from day to day, or the mysterious plant that has accompanied every update of Other Windows. And I certainly do not miss Windows Genuine Advantage, Microsoft’s awkward to assume all Windows users have been pirates. With Linux and open source software like Open Office, Mozilla Firefox VLC Media Player and hundreds of other free programs, I could essentially get for free the kind of features that Microsoft sells for a small fortune.
